Gadolinium (III) chloride hydrate is a water-soluble and hygroscopic rare earth compound of Gadolinium. It has a high magnetic moment, which makes it useful for enhancing signal intensity by reducing relaxation times. This compound is also used for semiconductor fabrication, nuclear reactor shielding, and as an injectable contrast agent for MRIs when combined with EDTA ligands. Additionally, it is used for making optical glass, laser crystals, and phosphors for color TV tubes.
